Faculty and staff planning for their eventual retirement from the university may consider reducing their scheduled weekly hours for a period of time. It’s important for them to understand the options available and the impact on their benefits so that they can make an informed decision.

Phased Retirement Program (Faculty)

A faculty member may consider a Phased Retirement Agreement that allows them to begin reducing and transitioning their faculty responsibilities. See the Phased Retirement employment event for details.

Transition to Part-Time at least 20 Hours but less than 37.5 Hours

Faculty and staff who transition to a role with scheduled weekly hours of at least 20 hours but less than 37.5 hours would be considered regular part-time employee with regular part-time benefits. Gradual Retirement (Faculty and Staff)

Employees may which to work for the university on a limited part-time basis. Faculty and Staff who have met the eligibility requirements for retirement and transition to a role with scheduled weekly hours of less than 20 (including 0 hours) will be able to continue their active medical, dental and vision coverages at part-time rates. When they are ready to fully retire they will be eligible for retiree benefits. Eligible faculty and staff do not need to retire and be hired to retain their eligibility for retiree benefits.
