Dozens of Washington University in St. Louis Human Resources staff and Wellness Champions came together to spread holiday cheer through a heartwarming volunteer initiative in Dec. 2024. The group wrote holiday cards for Project Holiday Cheer, a program supported by VOYCE, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and empowering individuals and families for quality living across the continuum of long-term care. The project aims to distribute 40,000 cards to bring smiles to seniors in area care facilities.
WashU team members Nikki Koehnemann, Emily Page, Amy Dunnegan, Emily Strong and Caralee Lynch delivered their contribution to the holiday card drive. The team was welcomed by VOYCE Executive Director Marjorie Moore and Development Coordinator Melody Fox. While local volunteers sorted thousands of colorful greeting cards at a nearby table, Moore shared insights about the organization’s vital work in the community, including their comprehensive approach to supporting seniors through their Ombudsman program, VOYCEconnect helpline, education initiatives, policy and advocacy work and elder justice programs.
This volunteer activity highlighted an important reality: many members of our WashU community are caring for aging loved ones while balancing work responsibilities. That’s why WashU is proud to offer comprehensive support through its Work-Life & Family Care hub, providing valuable resources for employees navigating elder care responsibilities.
The Family Care Hub provides access to:
- Emergency back-up care through Bright Horizons
- Center-based and in-home care options
- Educational resources for caregivers
- Support through our Employee Assistance Program (Guidance Resources)
- Connection to community resources and ratings for long-term care facilities
- Information about Medicare, Medicaid and aging services
Amy Dunnegan, WashU’s dedicated Child and Family Care Facilitator, helps employees navigate these resources and find solutions that work for their unique situations.
“We understand that caring for aging family members can be complex and emotionally challenging,” said Dunnegan. “We’re here to help our employees access the support they need.”
Whether you’re currently caring for an elderly family member or planning for future needs, WashU’s Family Care Hub can help you understand your options and available resources.
