Campus Security and Fire Safety

Washington University in St. Louis is committed to assisting all members of the University community in providing for their own safety and security. As such, the University periodically provides its students, faculty, and staff with important information about safety and security on campus, including the annual report required by the Campus Security Act, which is available on the Washington University Police Department website at police.wustl.edu as well as on the Washington University School of Medicine Protective Services website at facilities.med.wustl.edu/security.

Washington University prepares a brochure, “Safety and Security,” which contains the University’s Annual Security Report as well as the Annual Fire Safety Report, among other information. A printable electronic version of this brochure in PDF format is available at the following address: http://police.wustl.edu/Documents/2018-Safety-and-Security.pdf.

The website and the Safety and Security brochure contain information regarding campus security and personal safety issues, including crime prevention, law enforcement authority of the Washington University Police Department and Washington University School of Medicine Department of Protective Services, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, and other matters of importance to security on campus.  Crime statistics from the three previous calendar years are also provided for crime reported on campus, in certain off-campus buildings, on property owned or controlled by Washington University, and on certain public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. The statistical data for the University can be found in Appendices D and E of the Brochure and online at police.wustl.edu and at facilities.med.wustl.edu/security, respectively.

Pursuant to the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA), the University prepares an annual fire safety report outlining fire safety practices, standards, and on-campus housing fire statistics, also found within the “Safety and Security” brochure. In addition, the University’s Fire Logs for all on-campus housing facilities on the Danforth and Medical School campuses can be found in the Brochure and online at police.wustl.edu/Pages/Fire-Log-Archive.aspx and at facilities.med.wustl.edu/security/alerts-statistics-sex-crimes-harassment-general-security-tips/fire-safety-log/, respectively.
