Washington University knows that managers play a key role in living out the mission and achieving the goals of the University. The primary objective of this orientation program is to support a newly hired or promoted manager’s successful transition to a supervisory role within the University. It’s important to note, however, that the training is not just for new managers!
All managers can benefit from a refresher on these topics, as policies and employment laws are constantly evolving. All managers can benefit from understanding University policies and best practices, knowing the right people to contact for assistance, and learning critical skills that support successful working relationships.
Newly hired or promoted managers are encouraged to attend manager orientation (MO) within 90 days of their hire date or promotion date. They can choose to participate in one of the two available options:
- One full-day in-person session is offered every other month at the Link in the Loop or
- Two consecutive half-day virtual sessions via Zoom offered every month.
Participants will:
- Explore key information needed to successfully manage employee performance and organizational initiatives
- Examine HR policies and identify best practices for managing effectively at WashU
Class Duration: One full-day in-person session (8 hours, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) or two half-day virtual sessions (4 hours per session, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
To receive course completion, virtual attendees are required to attend both consecutive days (day 1 and 2) and must attend each day from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CT.
Audience: This class is for all Washington University in St. Louis newly hired or promoted managers who have at least one staff direct report. (Leading Others)
Facilitators: HR Functional Leaders, including: employee relations, HR operations, compensation, recruitment, and the Office of Institutional Equity
No-Show and Late Cancellation Fees: Cancellations received less than five (5) business days prior to scheduled class will result in a $50 cancellation fee charged to their department. If you’re no longer able to attend, please drop your registration in Workday Learning.
