Orientation Period Policy
The first six (6) months in a new position is a period of orientation. Individuals in a registered university apprenticeship program are subject to a three (3) month period of orientation. The orientation period is intended to allow a new, promoted or transferred employee to become familiar with the position and work environment and to demonstrate their capabilities. During this time, the employee’s knowledge, skills and abilities are reviewed on a continuing basis. The orientation period is a continuation of the selection process and may be formally or informally structured based on the needs of the school or department. The supervisor and/or a designated trainer should regularly meet with the new employee during this time period.
Standard practices with regard to performance management and the corrective action process apply. If there are concerns associated with the employee’s ability to adequately complete the orientation period, then the orientation period may be extended for up to 90 days.
A staff member in their orientation period may access their sick and vacation time accruals in alignment with the appropriate University policies.
