Danforth Campus Faculty Vacation Policy

At the beginning of each fiscal year, full-time faculty members will be granted vacation time for use during that fiscal year as follows:

  • Faculty members with 9-month appointments will receive 16 days of vacation to be utilized during the term of their appointment.
  • Faculty members with 10-month appointments will receive 18 days of vacation to be utilized during the term of their appointment.
  • Faculty members with 11-month appointments will receive 20 days of vacation to be utilized during the term of their appointment.
  • Faculty members with 12-month appointments will receive 22 days of vacation for use during the fiscal year.*

Faculty members with 12-month appointments who begin employment after July 1 will be granted vacation for the remainder of the fiscal year on a prorated basis.  Other faculty who begin employment during the academic year will be granted vacation for the remainder of the appointment on a prorated basis.

Unused vacation does not accrue or carry over into the next fiscal year and is not paid out upon separation from employment or in the case of a transfer to a non-faculty role.

Vacation is included in salary and is allocated equitably among the faculty member’s funding sources during the period that it was incurred (consistent with the method that the university effort reporting uses to accumulate and calculate the corresponding percentages of salary).

Time off for vacation must be reported to the faculty member’s department or program in accordance with their practice.

In general, faculty are expected to schedule vacation in a manner that minimizes interference with their university-related responsibilities. For example: it is anticipated that faculty with 9-month appointments and with ongoing teaching responsibilities will typically take the majority of their vacation time during regularly scheduled semester breaks. When applicable, faculty are responsible for securing appropriate coverage for responsibilities they will miss while on vacation.

This policy supersedes any vacation leave policy of any individual school or other unit to the extent any such policy conflicts with this policy.

The University reserves the right to modify this policy in whole or in part at any time.
