This course is a part of the Elevate series, a set of dynamic 90-minute sessions designed to elevate your skills and confidence to thrive in an ever-changing world. This development series equips employees with practical strategies and resources to navigate uncertainty, adapt to change, and drive success in any environment. Stay agile, stay ahead!

Course Description

Let’s be clear, some people have a fear of conflict or have a tendency to “people-please” so they won’t “rock the boat” when having conversations with peers, direct reports or even family members.  There’s no way of getting around Difficult Conversations when they are needed, however we can use the CLEAR Model to navigate towards actionable progress and understanding.

Target Audience

  • Anyone interested in learning how to have difficult conversations with clear goals towards resolving conflicts, building trust, fostering growth, and improving relationships both personally and professionally.
  • This class is for all Washington University in St. Louis staff employees (Leading Self, Others, or the Organization )

Workshop Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to think of the CLEAR model as your roadmap for tough talks:

  • Contracting: Set clear expectations for the conversation.
  • Listening: Actively listen to understand the other person’s perspective.
  • Exploration: Ask open-ended questions to dig deeper into the issue.
  • Action: Define actionable steps to address the problem.
  • Review: Recap the conversation and ensure everyone is on the same page.

Facilitator: Monica Black Robinson, Learning and Development Consultant
