Storm Recovery Volunteer Guidance for Managers

Question: My team wants to volunteer to help the community recovery. Is paid time available to WashU employees who wish to volunteer?

A: WashU does support and encourage employees who wish to volunteer on their own time to visit the St. Louis City’s Tornado Recovery website to learn where volunteers are needed. Employees should use vacation time if they plan to volunteer during scheduled work hours. WashU’s St. Louis Initiatives team also has a dedicated webpage with recovery support.

Any manager that chooses to coordinate a one-time team building volunteer activity may do so at their discretion and is able to use Department Approved Time Off in Workday in a limited manner (I.e. up to four hours of paid time per employee). Both exempt and non-exempt employees should enter time into Workday for tracking purposes.

WashU’s St. Louis Initiatives team will host several volunteer events on select Saturdays throughout June. These gatherings will provide meaningful ways for our WashU community to contribute to recovery efforts together outside of work hours.
