The Institute for Leadership Excellence (ILE) is a staff-focused initiative under WashU Leads, a Here & Next priority dedicated to providing leadership development opportunities to students, staff, and faculty, making WashU a premier institution for employing and retaining stellar leaders across positions. Please note, ELP and LEAD programs are paused in an effort to offer a broader range of initiatives to a larger audience of staff leaders and managers.

The ILE programs are based on the 70-20-10 adult learning model and follows a structure that repeats month over month, each with a different topic focus. Cumulatively, we recommend participants set aside about 12 hours each month to dedicate towards ILE, though that may vary by person.

Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)

ELP is designed for staff who seek to strengthen their leadership skills to enhance their impact within their direct sphere of influence. Ideal candidates for ELP are folks who manage complex projects/initiatives and/or individual contributors. They have authority to make decisions tied to daily work but likely require manager approval for big picture decisions. Ideal candidates for ELP have positions at WashU that involve decision making, people management, and/or fostering relationships with others.

Leadership Excellence and Development Program (LEAD)

LEAD is designed for staff who seek to strengthen their leadership skills to enhance their impact with people and systems multiple layers out from their direct sphere of influence. Ideal candidates for LEAD likely hold final decision-making power for components of the work their team does. Ideal candidates nurture a variety of types of work relationships and may be managers of other managers. They also have positions at WashU that involve people management, decision making, and fostering relationships with others.

Coaching Program

The Coaching Program is designed to familiarize participants with coaching principles and competencies while equipping them with exceptional skills to be leaders who coach. The skills learned in this program enable new coaches to work comfortably in various environments, build confidence in their coaching expertise and empower others by conducting meaningful coaching sessions.
