Effectively managing and optimizing employee performance is an essential leadership skill that enables you to build authentic trust and connection with those you lead. When performance management is done right, it becomes a powerful motivator for everyone. When leaders miss the mark, the repercussions are vast and long-lasting.

Performance management involves much more than just an annual evaluation. It is an ongoing, continuous process with the goal of creating an environment where people can build on skills that enable them to perform better in their roles, reach their potential, and boost their success while also accomplishing the strategic goals of the organization.

Course Outcomes:

  • Understand the components of performance management and the manager’s role and responsibilities throughout the performance cycle.
  • Recognize the importance of connecting an employee’s work with the larger organizational purpose.
  • Collaboratively establish clear expectations and goals using the SMART criteria.
  • Apply practical strategies to drive meaningful discussions throughout the performance cycle that foster connection, ensure alignment and drive progress.
  • Effectively prepare for and conduct performance reviews.
  • This course is highly participative, featuring group discussions, individual exercises, and role-play activities. Participants will be provided with skills, tools and best practices to set their team up for success.

Audience: This class is for all Washington University in St. Louis leaders and managers who have at least one staff direct report. (Leading Others)

Class Duration: 3.5 hours, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm

No-Show and Late Cancellation Fees:  Cancellations received less than five (5) business days prior to scheduled class will result in a $50 cancellation fee charged to their department. If you’re no longer able to attend, please drop your registration in Workday Learning.
