Long-Term Disability

The University provides its employees with Long Term Disability (LTD) coverage that continues a portion of their salary during an extended medical leave resulting from a serious illness or injury.

Who Is Eligible?
Regular full time and part-time faculty or staff members are eligible to receive LTD benefits. Full-time employee is a regular or visiting faculty member who works 100% of the required full-time workload, or a staff member who regularly works 37 1/2 or more hours per week. Part-time employee is a regular or visiting faculty member who works 50% or more but less than 100% of the required full-time workload, or a staff member who regularly works 20 or more but less than 37 1/2 hours per week.

You are considered disabled when you are unable to perform the duties associated with your own occupation for 6 months in a twelve month period.

Enrollment Period
No enrollment is required.

Effective Date
First of the month following one year of employment.

Benefit
The basic LTD benefit is 60% of your monthly earnings to a maximum benefit of $8,000 per month. University retirement contributions paid during disability period based on percentage received at the time the employee becomes disabled.

Sick Leave

Employees are not eligible to utilize WUSTL sick leave while on long term disability.

Premium
Free. The total cost is paid by the university.

Filing a Claim
Please contact your Benefits Department after three months of medical leave to receive an application if you expect your leave to continue beyond six months.

Long-Term Disability Buy-Up Option

The LTD buy-up option will help you meet your salary continuation needs during the fourth through the sixth month of the LTD waiting period.

Who Is Eligible?
Regular full time and part-time Medical School faculty and all regular full time and part-time staff members who have completed one year of service are eligible to purchase LTD buy-up benefits. Full-time employee is a regular or visiting faculty member who works 100% of the required full-time workload, or a staff member who regularly works 37 1/2 or more hours per week. Part-time employee is a regular or visiting faculty member who works 50% or more but less than 100% of the required full-time workload, or a staff member who regularly works 20 or more but less than 37 1/2 hours per week.

You are considered disabled when you are unable to perform the duties associated with your own occupation for three months.

Enrollment Period
Enrollment information will be sent in the month of your one year anniversary. If you decide not to enroll when you're first eligible and you wish to enroll in the future, you will be required to complete a statement of health and be approved by Unum Provident, the insurer of the LTD plan.

Sick Leave
Employees who have purchased the Long Term Disability Buy-Up Option may utilize sick leave at a rate of 40% of their budgeted hours during the duration of the Buy-Up Option.

Effective Date
The first of the month following one year of employment.

Monthly Benefit
The LTD buy-up benefit is 60% of your monthly salary for the fourth, fifth and sixth months of your medical leave or LTD waiting period.

Premium
The total cost of $.20 per hundred dollars of monthly salary is paid by the employee with after tax dollars. To calculate your individual premium, just divide your monthly gross pay by 100 and then multiply the results by $.20. See the following example:

  • $24,000 divided by 12 equals $2,000
  • $2,000 divided by 100 equals 20
  • 20 times $.20 equals $4.00
